How to figure out how many wraps on a MFist?
« on: April 17, 2015, 01:15:10 AM »
Hi my fellow knot tiers.
I'm trying to cover a golf ball with a Monkey Fist.
My questiong is, how do I determine how many wraps I'll need to cover this golf ball using 1/8th nylon braid?
Im in the middle of this project but its looking all mess up at various places.  I went with 11 wraps and have 11 all the way around but feel I'm going to have to take it all apart and start over.
Either I've tightened it too much in places while tying it, or I simply have too many or too little wraps.
Thanks, from a puzzled knotter.. :-/
Hi again, I think maybe the 11 wraps is right and maybe my jig needs adjusting and that might be what thru me orf  ?  :-/
I made a hand held jig for MFs, more as a teaching aid for members of my family years ago..Thinking its not suitable for 1/8th cord on such a large core...adjusting...

Hi New;
I'm a newbee too, & I've successfully tied a monkey fist on a tennis ball. My jig is a board w/ 4  1/4" dowels that fit snugly around the ball. I used bout 12 or 13 wraps using 550 paracord, which is bout 3/16" dia.  It's a simple knot, easy to tie.  Hope this helps.
                                                                                                          Cheers
                                                                                                                     Bob

Thanks Bob, I actually ended up tying it with 10 wraps on the golf ball and I came out great! :)  Which was no easy task with the large core and 1/8 solid braid nylon.
I then tied a Diamond Knot (doubled), went up over a large carabiner and did a Solomon bar back down to the DDK and tucking the ends into the DDK. Went back to the top and decided then to tie a seperate 3Lx5B doubled, THK over the top end of the Solomon bar
Came out nice and, is now gone! Couldn't hold onto it :)
I'm not having any luck uploading pictures but it can be seen on my YouTube channel if you search for "Monkey Fist Project Finished". I don't have the URL handy sorry.
Thanks again, I'll keep you info handy.
PS. My next MF challenge will be my biggest one ever, around a soccer ball size core with 3/4" twisted manilla rope, as a conversation piece and another addition to all the knotty creations I have already around the house :))

Keep being knotty!
Over n out.
