Hey Vince,

Here's a thought I had from looking around the site today. Why not shoot the Guild's Librarian an email for a little assistance? They may have just the thing you're looking for!

From the Publications link on the home page I found the IGKT Library (the email address is there as well) where they said:

The Guild's Librarian will also undertake reasonable reference searches on request. Comments on the Library and enquiries can be made to the Guild's Librarian.

The best chest beckets I have seen in recent years are those made by Karl Bareuther from Germany.
He brought a display of his chest becket construction method, showing each stage in the making to the 2K2 meeting in Fareham.  I will be seeing Karl at the October meeting in Cuxhaven so I will try and take some photographs of it - if he brings it.

P.S. I am not really bad - just mischevious!

Hello all....

I am right in the middle of making a pair of chest beckets. I took pictures along the way which can be seen in one of my picasea albums.  One of you stated to think of a becket as abeing a belrope with eyes to each ends, I like to think of a chest becket being more like a bow fender bended into the shape of a handle..but that's my personal opinion.

Here is the link to my album : http://picasaweb.google.com/avdsalm1/ChestBecket#

hope it helps and as you can see the project isn't finished yet so more pictures will be added in due time

kind regards
Andr?

Andre,

That is absolutely beautiful!!! May I ask what amount of time you have tied up (  ??? ) in that? A beautiful set of instructions, too!

Thank you all for the kind words about my chest beckets. Aknotter asked how mucg time went into tying. Well I didn't keep track of that actually but a rough estimation is about 10-15 hours for one becket and 2 -4 for the boltrope so far.

kind regards
Andre

Well, the old Biblical adage is correct, after all: "Ask and Ye Shall Receive".

Andre, your pictures are a superb tutorial, even without words or text.

Thank you so much!

Perhaps you might contact Brian and have him do this as a tutorial at KHWW when you've completed the project?  This is a seriously valuable teaching resource!

You really should do a book!

Hello again,

My plan is to make all the pictures into a tutorial and put on my own website once all the knotting is done. Please have a little patience with me...... ;)

kind regards
Andre

Patience?  Patience?  SURELY you jest!

Seriously,  that would be just a wonderful thing to do!

The more tutorials we can get online, the more interest we can generate in knots and knotting!

Hang in there Vince. Maybe Gordon will have some good pics from Karl Bareuther from Germany for us in a couple of days!!

IGKT Half-Yearly Meeting
    Date: Friday, 10 October 2008 - Sunday, 12 October 2008
    Venue: Fishing Museum, Cuxhaven, Germany

The Council of the International Guild of Knot Tyers has invited the German branch membership to host the 2008 October meeting, they in turn would like to invite the membership to attend the meeting

Here's the English translated page for his page about sea chest beckets on the web:
http://babelfish.yahoo.com/translate_url?doit=done&tt=url&intl=1&fr=bf-home&trurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.jack-tar.de%2Findex.php%3Foption%3Dcom_content%26task%3Dview%26id%3D42%26Itemid%3D68&lp=de_en&btnTrUrl=Translate

And this is his original German page:

hey guys,

I will be at that meeting too. I sure do hope Karl will be there along with his beautiful beckets. I certainly will take a couple of pics (again)

I met Karl in 2007 and made pictures of his beckets at that time. These are on my website for you to take a look at if you like.

have fun
