articles and link round up 5
« on: September 18, 2008, 05:59:34 AM »
last thread was getting long, time to start again!

This article is about a boy (12) who took a junior fire safety course which included selected knots and used this knowledge to, in all likelihood, save his father's life.
http://www.newsdurhamregion.com/news/article/108520

The Rapid City Journal (back in February, did I post about this one already?) talks knots with Richard Lehmann of the Rapid City Fire Department's training division.  Perhaps the knots he recommends you learn are the a similar list to the ones learned by the boy in the previous article.

In the past we've seen knotted molecules and knotted animals, and now:  knotted light.  It all sounds very interesting and way over my head.  8) 8)  That said, I'm going to hunt down that Nature magazine for the original article and see if more detail helps...
http://nextbigfuture.com/2008/09/knotted-light-in-respected-journal.html

In the September 2008 issue of Popular Science there is an article about university engineering student pranks (like hanging cars from unlikely places) which is also online.  The article mentions that along with the criminal code section on "mischief" the conspirators also had a copy of "The Complete Guide to Knots and Knot Tying" in their planning headquarters.
http://www.popsci.com/scitech/article/2008-08/extreme-engineering (3rd page for the mention)

The page of a blogger who is "passionate about traditional Chinese arts, especially Chinese knotting."  She also has an Etsy shop.

The Courier Post Online from South Jersey has an article about fishing knots.  It was posted in September 2008, but it looks awfully familiar

Blog about some knot sculptures in Shanghai in various materials.  Too bad the blogger couldn't understand the artist statement about what they mean and substituted their own commentary.

An article posted to the Free Craft Articles site about macrame.  IMHO it's not very accurate or good, but since it's free it's been turning up various places.

Another of those strangely dense blogs that seem to have been put together by web spiders in order to get higher search engine ranking for a particular term.  The relevant (??) bit is as follows:
"Heritage Foundation .... As tradition dies out, it becomes more valued. Ms. Lai Bi Yun has been involved in the handmade art of knotting for more than 20 years. She combines traditional Chinese knotting with modern glass and crystal beads to make trendy."

A "blog" about the history of Chinese knotting that "borrows" from a number of recognizable different sources with about half of the text lifted almost verbatim from my site.
http://anarcaquista.blogspot.com/2008/09/chinese-knotting.html

Someone blogs about their shop that they would like to open which will have kumihimo (Japanese braided) works.  They describe it thusly: "It is called Kumihimo, which (funny enough since she found it in Germany) is a centuries-old Japanese braiding/knotting technique."  Except that originally, it just said knotting.  If you go down the list of comments you'll see no mention of braiding until the end.  That would be after the post "removed by a blog administrator" which points out that kumihimo is braiding, not knotting.  You might wonder how I would know the contents of the censored post when I am probably not the administrator.  Yes, you are probably correct.  8) 8)

A couple of knot substitute/helpers (?) starting with the "adjustable rope stop" called "slipknot"
http://news.thomasnet.com/fullstory/820540

and the "figure 9 carabiner" which helps you fix ropes to a fixed point with minimal knot knowledge
http://www.kk.org/cooltools/archives/003052.php

Now a couple of video sources:
on Metacafe, a poster styled sammykyut has posted a fair number of how-to-tie knot videos.  Don't forget to check out the "related video" link (mostly necktie knots)
http://www.metacafe.com/channels/sammykyut/

on YouTube there's an interesting double coin knot vs carrick bend video by the Two Knotty Boys.  A note for the sensitive (or those browsing with youngsters) that the TKB's main area of knotty interest is unrelated to outdoor pursuits.  Something to be aware of when following their other links.  That said, their decorative knot videos that I've viewed are excellent.

Yet another blog entry about Chinese knots with text that doesn't cover any new ground (and in this case, in a blinding colour combination).  That said, the claim is that the knot pictured is the work of the blog author.  Here's hoping there's more to come.

The Instructables site is having another contest.  This one is about answering the "burning questions" asked by site visitors.  One of the "wanted instructions" IGKTers might want to answer are "Friendship bracelets" and "How to braid" (although that last may be more appropriate for Braid Society members....  8)
http://www.instructables.com/contest/burningquestions6/

Another congregation point for knot tyers.  The deviantART forum is mostly dedicated to graphic art.  There is also a lively and helpful forum for those dedicated to computer art.  I have only recently discovered their artisan crafts category.  While, right there in the directory name, the area started out as baskets (the information button says baskets and woven reed creations).  Clearly, though,  they were just asking for it when they were being oblique (cutesy?) and named the area "knotting and weavings"

A very strange blog entry which appears to mostly be for the purposes of attempting to change their search engine ranking.  I mention it in case I'm wrong and someone else knows better (because I'd love to see furniture with knots carved into them!  8).  The text appears to be the slap-dash merging of familiar text about Chinese knotting and something about furniture.  The rest of the site does indeed sell furniture, but the knot related furniture mentioned does not appear to exist.  For the purposes of not helping their suspicious behavior, I've added some spaces to link below.  Cut and paste into your browser and remove the spaces to judge for yourself.

the last time my browser crashed i had 61 open tabs (on one window, more in other windows) most of which were pages waiting for mentions in these round-ups.  time to give my computer a break!

Suzen Millodot's latest book "Ornamental Knots for Beaded Jewellery: New Knots , New Projects, New Designs" published by Search Press, ISBN 978-1-84448-248-1 is out and I snapped it up.  The problem as seen from a person with my collection of books is that with the exception of Guinevere's Necklace (a like Celtic inspired project) I have seen all of this before many, many times.    There's dragonflies, pipa/teardrop knots, macrame necklaces and long button knots.  Other than being written in English it could be just about any basic book you pick up in Chinatown.  But then, just because I have 20 other books exactly like this (only not in English) does not mean that it's not something the anglophone market needs.  If you've got your Lydia Chen collection, then only 1 or 2 Celtic knots are new.  If you've seen Suzen's other books, and like the way she puts together projects, then get this one.  If you're a practical knotter and want to get more into the decorative side or want to entice your friend with magpie tendencies (ooooh, shiny!) then this is not a bad place to start.

this is another one of those wacky blogs that seem to make very little sense, slapped together with content from other sites based on a theme.  this one a little more coherent than most, a human might even have composed some of the text, plus it's got pictures.

this wire jewelry class will teach a "knot bead".  it's not really a knot but it looks cool.  it's interesting how the idea of knots is so basic to our thoughts that it is borrowed to add flavour to things that are not knots at all.

an article worth reading in the Epoch times about Chinese knotting.  while the content is not revolutionary, it appears actually original to the writer, plus they nicely print the Chinese characters and translate the terms as well as transliterate (romanize/pinyin) the terms.

it's a well known phenomenon that we tend to scan web material and that's very true of me.  i scanned this article and liked it enough to recommend it highly and print it out for later reading and safekeeping.  when i read it on paper, i realized that the article was, in fact, shoddily researched.  by the time i got to the bottom of the article and recognized my own words lightly reprocessed it was clear that at least in the later section it was half cut-n-paste and half rampant speculation (the good luck knot was only recently named, it was never more representative of good luck than any other knot, so that part is just blather).  that said, the translation of terms part and character discussion is valid and accurate, so that part is still valuable.
