ABoK#1466-1471. Simple hitches around ropes
« on: February 22, 2011, 08:22:23 PM »
I want to make up my mind for a simple, 2 round turns hitch around a tensioned Main line. (1) Ashley s  ABoK has 6 such hitches, ( he says that can serve also as bends around larger ropes ): ABoK#1466-1471. Which one holds better, around a same diameter rope ?

1) to serve as a secondary hitch, along with the successive nipping loops, at the "B hitch" family of hitches :

For the time being, I use a "neckband" made by a Double Overhand-Strangle knot, which offers only the required alignment of the Standing part with the Main line. It would not be a bad idea to do the same thing using a hitch that can also offer some aditional anti-slippage advantage.
This is not a knot.

Hello Xarax.

One design/attribute to consider is what the hitch will be used for. Meaning, will the pull/load be relatively parallel with the tensioned main line? Or will it suspend a load/pull perpendicular with the main line.

Hitching at right angles to the main rope with same sized rope while being secure (both in the direction of load and along the main line), easy to tie and untie requires at least an over and under path of the hitching rope IMHO.
ABOK # 1469 & 1470 for example with 1469 of those two being my pick of those.
In 1469 I prefer the way the WE is somewhat isolated from the movement of the SP by crossing to the turn opposite.

Hitching for "parallel" pull/load might need another hitch/bend altogether, but with the addition of some well place roundturns in the above hitch, it probably would suffice.
To Be Tested First.

I believe that we have to give a try to solve the harder problems first... If we are lucky, and succeed, then we will be able to solve the rest in no time. The hard problem is when the pull/load is parallel with the Main line, AND, when the Main line is of about the same diameter as the hitch s rope, AND, when the Main line is tensioned. If we solve this, the rest is a piece of cake.
The second place in ABoK where Ashley is dealing with such hitches, is ABoK#1733-1762. But the hitches presented there are more complex, multi coiled structures. I am looking for the simplest possible hitches, those with 2 coils only.
