Over on the PAB branch website there are some pictures of a macrame piece done by the ever-popular and always-lovely Mr. Geoff Budworth. The macrame is (as one would expect) a stunning work, but what really makes me koo-koo is how he ended the work off.

Obviously, he brought the knotting down to a point and then added the three rows of half-hitches as a finial, but it looks like he's taken the outboard half-hitch's working line and tucked it along side his main line, then half-hitched over the two and snipped the "old" working part off, then taken the working part of the latest half-hitch and repeated the process until he got to the centre point. I'm pretty sure that's correct, if a bit obsfucatory. (Clear as mud...)
But how the heck did he do the centre-point?
Anyone having a clue or a better way with words than I is invited to chime in on this... it's an elegant and eye-pleasing method, entirely, and I'd love to learn it.
