Maypole Dancing connections with Sinnets???
« on: May 29, 2009, 05:32:52 PM »
When I was younger school children used to do Maypole Dancing. This left beautiful wrapped ribbon designs on the poles. Looking at solid sinnets ABOK 3037 et al  it would appear solid sinnets and Maypole Dancing produce the same results, in somewhat the same way.
Does anyone know of any historical or traditional link between these two methods of construction???
(I will leave for a future discussion the possible development of 'Mast Dancing on a Tall Ship')

Hi!

My wife is a morris dancer, and a couple of years ago did some maypole dancing. I was astonished (and delighted) to see the designs appear on the pole - I had no idea until I saw it. I might have some film somewhere...

Mast dancing on a tall ship - what a fab idea!

Wow, Team Braiding - I wonder if the patterns and jig steps have been saved anywhere.

Call to everyone who can remember Maypole dancing - tell us the steps you were taught, and what patterns they made.

Our elementary school did maypole dancing in the early 1950s.  We used crepe paper streamers and it looked like the photos here.  Tony
