Need Cavandoli Resources
« on: July 21, 2005, 05:34:57 AM »
HI all! I am new to the forum. I learned macrame many years ago in the second grade and for some reason am itching to take it back up again. Well, actually I saw some wonderful artwork from Joan Babcock in a recent issue of Beadwork magazine and was astounded by her stuff. She does Cavandoli macrame. I have been searching on the internet for more info on it. Basically when I google all I get are dictionary definitions of what cavondli means and links to artists who do the technique. I can find no books about it. I know it is just horizontal and virtical double half-hitches, but I would like something more to read about. Does anyone have any resources they could share? I would really appreciate it.

Thank you,
Jamica
::)  OH no!! This form ruined Joan's name! It isn't Babthingy at all. It is Bab-another name for rooster. LOL!

Hello!
You could try
www.amazon.com   search word  [macrame]

and

www.bookfinder.com ;  search word in the title field [cavandoli], at this moment there is one entry
You may want to try [macrame] as search word also : books here are usually ( alas, not always) cheaper than on amazon.
What you do not find in the vast bookfinder database you have (almost) no chance to find. Try again from time to time as  data evolve.

Hope that help. Good luck witn your macrame

Charles

Macrame - Creative Design in Knotting by Dona Z. Meilach - Lib or Congress Card No. 73-147330 - Crown Publishers Inc 1971.
This book has several cavandoli style projects in it (mainly attire).
Good luck in your hunt for materials

If you realise that Friendship bands are the same technic as cavandoli work, but just turned 45 degrees, you might find a lot of help in those paterns (after you learned the basics in a good book on Cavandoli.)
The book "Knotted Fabrics" by Stuart Grainger has a chapter on Cavandoli, it is only 8 pages and a few more photos, but tells you most if not all of what you need to know. (It is still available through the supplies secretary of the IGKT, http://www.igkt.net/publications/index.html )
There are more books but your best bet are needle craft books from early 20 century.

You can use any kind of string (or rope) as long as all strands are the same thickness and behave the same.
The only knot you need is this half hitch, you find it here: http://www.home.zonnet.nl/willeke_igkt/tables/half_hitch_knot_table.html

PS, I have changed the link, now it goes to the english page in my website.

Thank you so much for your help!!!

Nautile,

You know, I constantly forget to look at book sites! ::) Doh!! Thanks for those sites.

Fairlead,

Thanks! I haven't heard that book before but will look it up at my local library.

Willeke,

Thanks for the book lead. And you know, I had realized that too, about the friendship bracelts. In the 80's I was sought out by my brothers' friends to make them bracelets because of my macrame know-how. I think I will brush up on them. Got some embroidery floss right here.

Thank you all,

jamica

Hello
Here is a link
http://www.chez.com/siubhan/macram/cavend.htm
if it does not work try a cut/pas or a Google search on
"technique cavEndoli" with E and not A. And" technique" as it is written in French.
Good luck
