Double Loop Knots in Real Life

Hi Dan,

I applaud you for trying to decipher the picture.
Even looking at the black leather right in front of me, it's hard to tell which strand does what without looseing the structure (which is what I did).

the best I can deduce is that the lower right strand bends through righthand Strangle to go ANTI-clockwise through the key ring, and then comes back (as upper-right strand)
to Strangle the upper-left strand, which makes the Strangle just passed through.

I think this is spot on. In other words:
Strand One goes: bottom left, through DOH, bottom right, through key, upper right, then makes DOH over Strand Two
Strand Two goes: upper left, through DOH, then makes DOH over Strand One.

To clarify the structure, on the following picture, the two crossing points are where each end of the string will tie a double overhand knot.



I tried to understand your other way to use the grapevine for this problem, but wasn't sure if I got the one you were talking about. The other one I see is this, but somehow I don't think that's what you have in mind.

Bingo.  (Andy, the words are there, how'd you miss it?)

And the 2nd one is more obvious:  the Grapevine is tied
to include the "pass-through" strand.  (So, each Strangle
component strangles not only its opposite partner (S.Part)
but also the pass-through strand.  It make a sort of noose
(as did the above case, oddly), and esp. in the leather
will be stable but for exceptional and oddly applied force.)

I just tried Dan's second, grippier version (which you just explained) in regular cord. Very handsome because of the perfect grapevine alignment. It does have a bit of slip, but I agree with you both that it would grip well in leather. I only bought a yard the other day (at the no-bargain rate of ten cents an inch), will try it at the next chance.

... must have to deliberately try for slippage.

I've just tied it in 3/8" 12-strand coated Dyneema,
and that doesn't slip w/o deliberate, firm effort.
In small cord, one should be able to make it amply
non-slipping.  (There is an angler's knot -- Nail Knot --
that uses a similar multi-Overhand for gripping.)
Certainly, for just holding some light items around
the neck, this will have no troubles.

I tried this this afternoon as a substitute for the usual bottle hanging knot (using a plastic 2 litre bottle with a reinforced flange) and it works very well and is a lot easier to demonstrate to those unfamiliar with the more complex knot with 2 carrying loops. The bottle does hang at slight angle but this is hardly a problem and it seems less likely to slip off from careless handling.
