« on: August 11, 2011, 10:35:47 PM »
(one can quote CLDay's famous remark about friction)

Couldst someone bend that remark to my halyards? No libraries to which I have access own Day's book the book of Day's.

[This belongs in Chit Chat, but to be quick ... : ]

CLDay, The Art of Knotting & Splicing, 4th ed.
p.16, 2nd col. top

"Little is known about the mechanics of knots, and
friction itself is still a scientific mystery.  Under the
circumstances, it behooves the layman to speak skep-
tically rather than dogmatically about why knots be-
have the way they do."

Hi swanoonie,

Welcome,

Have a read of Roo's excellent site, in particular his page on The Power of Friction  --  a lot has been learnt since that paragraph was written by Day.
