What manufacturing variables determine rope characteristics?
« on: April 22, 2010, 12:11:28 PM »
Hi, I'm new here. I have a few questions (as somebody that knows nothing about rope making), I hope this is the right place to ask...

It seems fairly obvious that the number of twists per given length affects weight and usually flexibility. The more yarns per ply seem to give a finer smoother rope. However, I'm wondering what affects the resistance when one tries to untwist the rope, apart from the twist rate of the rope? Thus, what is the best way to maintain flexibility/lightness whilst resisting 'high-stranding' in rope with a low twist rate, i.e. when the twist becomes loose and a strand goes out of place?

I'm assuming the characteristics of a 3-ply twisted jute rope, given the same fibre, are dictated by:

    * Number/thickness of yarns per ply
    * Tightness/twist rate of the yarn
    * Tightness/twist rate of the plies
    * Tightness/twist rate of the rope

I'd be interested to hear from those who are making their own rope what combinations give which characteristics. I'm also wondering if the degree of 'fuzz', i.e. hairyness and tendency to shed fibres, dictated by any of these factors?

I'm aiming for a soft, light, flexible rope with a smooth, or even polished finish, that resists 'high-stranding' well and is pale in colour. All this needs to be achieved without compromising strength. I have heard of rayon being added to increase strength but I'm unsure whether this was achieved by mixing rayon and jute fibres within the yarn or by adding rayon threads to each ply. I understand that there are various types of jute, e.g. tossa. What would you recommend? How do I tell them apart?

Lots of questions, I know but any input would be much appreciated.

One good source of information on this subject is the Yahoo ropemaking group

Thanks, Tony. I didn't know there was one but I should have guessed  ::)
