Good point BUT...
The GP will use terms like 'salt' and 'vinegar' and 'sugar' and 'baking soda' - and I dare say, always will do - but the field that has mastered the science of these substances has decided for the sake of logical uniformity and clarity on a naming system which is now globally accepted in the field of Chemistry and in virtually every other scientific field that needs to refer unambiguously to elements and compounds.
There is even a small example of this 'expert' terminology from within our own field - the GP will tie down a load with a knot or tie up a board with a knot or tie their shoe laces with a knot - but within the field of knotting we elect to use a specialised terminology to reduce ambiguity - we have bends and hitches.
So, whilst we should not even be considering influencing what the GP call a binding, I believe that it is rational and reasonable for us to consider how we further improve the order and rationality of our terminology - even though it has been in place for longer than the terms first imagined by the early alchemists - If we think it is warranted, then at least within the Guild we should consider 'cleaning up' our naming terminology where we see it would bring clarity and remove ambiguity. After all, the other fields knitting, weaving, braiding etc have all developed their own phraseology for use within their field - why shouldn't we ?
