Vertical Lifting of Circular/Round Objects
« on: November 20, 2010, 01:36:58 PM »
Hello all,

Im new to the forum and knots in general so be easy if I dont get it right.

Im looking for information on how I can best lift a round/ circular object, like a 9litre plastic bucket without a handle, vertically.

At the moment Im using a bowline to set up a loop, putting a clove hitch into the loop and trying to split the clove hitch to form a cradle underneath and a bit of security round the sides, under the lip of the bucket.
This has limited success.  Probably 1 in 4 dont work  :-[and i need to keep some water in the bucket to hold tension on the line so the clove hitch doesnt fall apart on the lowering. >:(

Any ideas to speed up the process and make it more efficient would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the Forum. I would try a barrel sling but as the bucket has a lip then a bottle sling might also work (rather depends on the rim). The first link below is to a barrel sling - the mechanism is pretty simple. A bottle or jar sling is more complex to tie - see the second link - and is not usually used on a wide object. A Google search for either of these knots will give you more options if these are not clear enough.

Is there a reason you can't drill some holes in your plastic bucket?
