How about a Challenge
« on: November 22, 2005, 11:15:55 AM »
I belong to a couple of Photography forums and they each set challenges for members on a regular basis.  The challenge will relate to taking a photo according to a particular theme.  I thought it might be interesting if we tried something along these lines on this forum.

I figure it could be along the lines of: someone states the challenge, a timeframe is given, items are created by memebrs, photos of items are placed in one spot on the web, a poll is started to vote for the items and the winner selects the next challenge to start the process again.

Challenges could be anything; what can you make out of one shoelace, or six feet of paracord, make a keyring or make somehting you can wear etc.  The challenges could be very broad so as to allow our imaginations to take flight or they could be specific eg a 5" bellrope.  If you win a challenge you then get to set the next one.  The idea would be to submit something you made since the challenge was established rather than submit something you made in the past.

Any or all of this could be changed; I just thought it was a good idea and I'd try to get the ball rolling.

Let me know what you think.

Hi, I like the idea but unless you forward some extra hours (perhaps expanding the 24 per day to 25?) I suggest you keep it really simple.  Also visit <www.KHWW.net> and look at the knot of the month.  You might work with knothead (Brian Kidd) and then link it from here to there.  I'd like to play too and would respond to the chalenge if you keep it short and sweet.  I once was in a creative writing workshop, for which we "had" to write to the chalenge each week.  It really pulls you out of your rut or forces you to think beyond what you normally do.  If you keep it simple I think almost eveyone can find time to put up something.  Also not all forum visitors have a way of posting their project so I'd entertain ideas about how to include these folks as well.  Cheers.

I like the idea of setting a challange.

Let me set the first.

One year Frank Brown send out a Christmas e-mail with a reindeer photograph. He made the animal himself.

Remembering that I would like to set the chalange on an animal in Christmas style, colours or outfit.
It can be 2 or 3 dimensions, any size, any way of knotting but has to be made out of string/rope entirely.
(Not clothed in fabric.)

How about that for a first challenge?

Hi Willeke,

I'll take you up on that challange although Christmas colours is a bit tricky, I only have black and white string. Anyone know of a better way of dying braided polyester than colouring it with permanent marker? where should I post images provided I manage to make something vagely resembaling an animal? Any format, size specifications, etc? (I have never done this kind of thing online before).

Cheers,
Finn, Australia

PS: is Knot of the Month themed? where do you find out what the theme is?

yes knot of the month is themed. The themes are clearly written on the KHWW website in the "knot of the month" section.

Finn, I think that black and white are perfect Christmas colours.

If you do not have a website or internet album to post the picture, I am willing to host it on mine. Any picture clear enough to see the animal will do, if it is to big for this forum I will post both the orriginal and a smaller version.
Just let me know if you need my e-mail address.
