The big book of sling and rope braids.

This book, by Roderick Owen, I missed getting it on eBay recently.
Does anybody know it?
Could you recommend it?
Is there a similar book by another author?

All info is very welcome.

It is a nice book, 55 braids, including flat, round and square braids. Clear diagrams, (the kind that many braiding books use,) and colour photos of the braids, often in several colour variations.
And good instructions how to make and use braiding cards and stools, (one of which you need for the braiding style.)

So, if the price is right, buy it.

But there are more braiding books around.
If you want to braid without needing tools, try to get Sling braiding of the Andes, by Adele Cahlander.
(My favourite)

For braiding on cards (also called disks,) or stools, there are many books by now on Kumihimo, and all of those I remember are very much alike, so it is hard to say which one to buy.
I have Kumihimo, Japanese silk braiding techniques, by Catherine Martin. While it is a good book in itself, I like the Roderick Owen book beter.

You can also have a good look on the web, there are several sites with braiding instructions.

I hope this helps,

Willeke

Most helpful, thank you. These braids are very good looking and I will try to get a good book on the subject.

 Gudday
This book gets full marks from me--- very pretty and good descriptions. Didn't cost me much as wife got it for birthday present. Way to go! tried a couple and used embroidery thread, 35 mm cassette holders, cardboard, stray bits of dowel.
Cheers

It has been reprinted (brand new much cheaper copies available!!!).  Offhand I can't give you a specific store, but go to Unicorn Books (http://www.unicornbooks.com/detail.asp?pBookID=1893063089) then see who near you carries their books.

The big book of sling braids is the same book (think hamlyn book of knots vs the ultimate knot book 8-).

Other books on the same topic include "Beginner's Guide to Braiding" by Jacqui Carey.  "Kumihimo: The Essence of Japanese Braiding" by Makiko Tada.

These are some of the in-print books in English.  There are many, many more in Japanese.  Also other non-beginner books in English.  Just let me know if you want me to go on on the topic. 8-)
