https://picasaweb.google.com/igktpab/100426Fid  is a link to some pictures of a home made fid.  The captions give a pretty good description of making it.  The last 2 pix are all that I need to tie almost any decorative knot (at least the ones I can tie).  I use dental floss for seizings and such.  Of course you need a lighter to burn the ends (of synthetics) and some masking tape.  I also have a tape measure and various safety pins and map pins.  Ask your doctor and he/she will probably give you some hemostats and tissue forceps if you explain why you want them.  You will always add stuff to your kit, but I find the listed tools the ones I use most often.    :P

ABOUT PICASA: When viewing a pic, click on the magnyfying glass near the upper right corner to see a larger version.  While displaying the larger version, there is a "slide bar" down at the lower right which, when moved, will make the view larger or smaller.  Click and hold anywhere in the pic to move around the display.

I always burn my fingers on a lighter (I might have had more practice had I been a smoker when I was younger - except I might not be here now to post this ...) and found a very small gas-propelled soldering iron, a bit bigger than a very large ballpoint pen, in my husband's tool box some years ago.  He now has to rootle around in my tool box if he wants it.  It's perfect for sealing ends and cutting small ropes, with interchangeable heads.  I don't know where you get it, but it says "Portasol Technic" on it.

Diana.

http://www.portasol.com/product-r1.asp?P_ID=333  The Portasol Technic doesn't appear to be available in North America, but this link shows it is in Europe.  That looks like a great tool to have!  (I did a GOOGLE search on Portasol Technic and found hundreds of links - this site was the first.)

I personally use a turbo lighter similar to the one shown - very cheap on eBay.

It can be used like a normal lighter, or it can also be locked in the on position so that you can use both hands to hold your work.
