New home knot project - ***Need help***
« on: September 20, 2018, 09:57:49 PM »
Hi Guys, I'm new to creating knots and especially those that are decoratively good and can be load-bearing.

Im working on a new home project and have created the knot in the attached image using standard 8mm cotton rope. The top vertical line will tie onto a hook, the three lower lines will go into a board, and the actual knot is used to concentrate all of the lines and make it look decorative. Importantly this need to be load-bearing around 7KG to 10KG.

Issue: The current knot is not very strong and the horizontal lines are prone to go out of shape once there is a bit of load.

Could any one assist with a better design?

We can't really know what your knot IS,
from this tied-snug image (and no words
--wall or fewer-- to explain.  E.g., how many
pieces of rope are there?  --1 so 2 ends, or
2 w/4 ends?

The structure reminds me of 3-legged conch/welk
pot bridles, where two legs are formed in one piece
of rope, and the 3rd leg --half-length thus-- makes
a trio by being tied up into the 1-2 legs' apex bight.

One can do this by simply forming the 3rd leg
into a bight of sufficient length and then *hitching*
to this and the folded 1-2 legs' bight (united w/3rd's)
with a sheet bend /becket hitch or --more like your
knot in length, shaping-- the longer Albright knot.

Since you have four ends coming out of the knot, a bend like the Zeppelin Bend with very long tails may be used and should be pleasing to the eye.

The standing parts would run vertical while the extra-long free ends would form the left and right leads.

If you want a more substantial look, you could make it a Double Zeppelin Bend as shown lower on the linked page.   The number of repeated final tucks could be altered to decorative taste, but might start looking odd past a Triple Zeppelin.

I'll offer another semi-decorative suggestion:  Imagine a Figure Eight Loop with the free end untucked one tuck to allow it to hang with the loop.  Then imagine that the loop is cut.

The joint should be stable enough support the modest weights involved.

While it would be less decorative, a simple sheet bend with very long free ends would at least be very compact.  Such compactness may then allow covering with a decorative sleeve like a Turk's Head.

Thanks for the response Dan.

I've attached some pictures to explain the knot further.

It is made of two pieces, the first piece makes and initial look and the tails go down. The second piece starts at the tails of the first piece then goes up to the top of the loop where it wraps around +-7 times then tucks into the wraps and up and out of the top loop. When pooling the three bottom tails and the single top tail is tightens up.

Thanks Roo, the double Zeppelin knot is very strong, not the most substantial looking knot and i was hoping to have something a but more prominent. Ive attached a picture of what it looks like.

I gave this option a bash.

Attached are the pictures. It looks ok from the front but the back doesn't look great. To get thee tails going down,  I took one of the top tails back through as per the picture.

Thanks for the great ideas everyone.

Please feel free to share any others as i'm keen to see how i can create a larger looking knot that will have good load bearing.

Hmm.  Not that it is necessarily bad, but you have it 90 degrees off from the orientation I was envisioning.
