Might work for some but I prefer the 3 turns around my hand method.

This little gem gets a lot play on here, and I'm amazed people don't use the figure 8 method. It's probably the easiest to remember and yields a good knot every time. For me, the figure 8 method is MUCH easier to remember than trying to make two or three turns around my hand and then move them around all over the place trying to get the right structure.

All over the place?  I've seen such messy procedures, but it's quite possible to go from coils to the final product with one sweeping motion (first diagram):
