Are both of these knots a bowline?
« on: September 06, 2011, 04:05:10 AM »
Are both of these knots a bowline? The knot on the right is for certain a bowline, as its construction is the same as what is in the ABOK#1010 (http://igkt.net/sm/index.php?topic=3233.0)

Is the knot on the left a bowline as well? The loop is on the LHS not the RHS but the loop in both cases crosses over the standing line.

Thanks!

@ bingie - Welcome to the forum!

As a right-handed person, I more naturally (easily) make the knot you show on the right (thus, this is the right-handed version of the bowline - I tie it with the working end of the rope in my right hand).  The knot on the left is the left-handed version of the bowline.  Both are considerd to be ABOK 1010.  And as mentioned by Derek, right-handed and left-handed versions of the same knot are mirror images of one another.

BTW in some knots or bends, it is not obvious which version one would call right-handed or left-handed.
