Colored Cotton Cord
« on: September 12, 2011, 11:30:19 PM »
Hi all:

I have been getting a few requests for dyed cotton cord and I have been thinking about getting into the colored cord game for limited runs.
If there is enough interest in the dyed cord I can get a run of the cord made.
It would be the same cord that I am currently selling on my website.  The dyeing process involves a commitment to getting 65 lbs of yarn (65 lbs is the minimum that they will dye per color) The yarn has to be shipped to the dyeworks then the yarn is put into a pressurized vat and then the colorfast dye is pushed into the yarn. After that it is shipped to the mill to be twisted into cord.  The dyeing process ends up costing about $5.00 per lb of yarn which would add $10.00 to the price of a 2 lb spool.  I have made a few runs of the dyed cord for some people to use to make nautical style belts and bracelets.  You can see the colors on their website.
(I'm not getting any commision on any sales this is just the easiest way for me to show the colors)

If there is enough interest in the colored cord I can see about getting some made up in a few sizes to offer to the knot tying public.

I will have to say it does look good when I open a box and see those different colors in there and then the idea gears start clicking.  I was also suprised to find out how popular the pink cord was.

Anyway let me know if you are interested if I could get enough interest for 30 2 lb spools in any of the colors I could probably do this.

I would love some but the postage cost to the UK is prohibitive  - over here Dylon seems to work well for small batches done in a washing up bowl!.

I really like the bold colors that they have on the site - nice stuff!  I'll commit to a few spools Marty, if you are about to set some up.  This makes it very attractive for those in the US to get a knot-tyer's tight cotton cord instead of having to use plastic.  A few basic colors will do nicely.

Would it help if a few from the UK purchased together to share the postage costs? Just an idea?

Postage from the US outside the country is crazy.  Ever since they got rid of seamail and everything is going by airpost when a package goes over 4 lbs it makes a big jump and ends up costing almost as much as the cord.  I have some customers that travel over here for work related things and they sometimes have me send packages to their hotel or to friends that they will be visiting then they take it over in their luggage.  I was planning to make a first run in bright colors: red, yellow, green, blue, purple and pink. I might be able to get the mill to split the run into 20 lb runs per color of 3 different sizes I'm thinking size 21, 36 and 60.  I think that would be a good range to have to work with but I'm looking for feedback so let me know what you think also.

15B!  15B!

Red, Jello, Bleck, Grin.   How about a dark (Flag) blew?

(Waitaminnit... I just spent my allowance into 2016!!)

Any progress on the < #12 hard-laid cord?

I wouldn't mind a spool of 2mm in maroon if you get around to that color.  Might take some others in primary colors, but I wanted to get that out there.
