from double harness bend to reever or linfit knots
« on: September 16, 2011, 09:29:46 PM »
Hi, All!  Knot newbie (knewbie?) and first time poster here. I'd like to first apologize if this is the wrong forum for this post, and also for my general newbieness, and also for the fact that I'm ugly and my mother dresses me funny.

I've been working through Budworth's "Ultimate Encyclopedia" book and came across the Linfit Knot, which he said was devised by Owen Nuttall.  I'm not an angler, but I was tinkering around with the knot and have been interested to discover and learn about knots related to it.  I'm hoping to get confirmation of my findings here and corrections of my misconceptions.

First, I've attached images of the Linfit knot from two sides.  Does that look right?  I initially struggled with Budworth's description of how to tie it and wasn't sure from the picture in that book what I was supposed to end up with.

I also found the Linfit in Google Books from Budworth's "Practical Fishing Knots" -- as of today it's the top result for this query: http://www.google.com/webhp?hl=en#sclient=psy-ab&hl=en&site=webhp&source=hp&q=budworth+practical+fishing+knots+linfit

Same technique, although now using an illustration instead of photos.  I'm pretty sure there's an error in the last diagram -- in the lower right part of the illustration, a blue line that was going over the mustard line in step 2 has been moved under in step 3.

As I played with the knot, I found where after untucking the ends, it transposed into what I soon learned was the Double Harness Bend. (And this relationship was further confirmed here http://www.enm.bris.ac.uk/staff/RRClements/knots/Reever.pdf. On this forum and in that Clements PDF from Knotting Matters, I found where you can tuck in the ends of a double harness bend to get a Reever knot.  (Figure 2a.)

It's been fun to discover all these connections.  I've developed my own way of tying the Linfit knot that is easier for me -- it's similar to the Figure 2a method described in Clement's article.  When I get to the position shown in the attached double-harness-bend-or-reever-or-linfit.jpg image, I just tuck the ends accordingly.

So how about it -- does anyone have any observations or corrections or further wisdom about this apparent family of knots? Have I stumbled upon a previously unknown connection between the Linfit and these other knots?  I haven't found much about the Linfit out there on the net and this forum.
