knots around the house
« on: May 22, 2011, 06:38:01 PM »
I wanted to create a topic similar to "knots in the wild" but focused on knots igkt members use around the house.  to start off, here are some pics I took after cleaning out my shed...

I should have taken a before pic also.  the second bike was leaning on the patio chairs, which were always sliding down to the ground and moving it or bumping anything would cause the tools to fall.  pulling a bike out was a daily annoyance.

I hung the tools from the cross beams of the shelf.  buntline hitches at the top, icicle hitches at the bottom.  I used a constrictor for the broom at the back cause it was hard to reach, though I'll probably regret it next time I have to sweep.  I found that the chairs don't fall if they're tied in pairs.  constrictors didn't hold so I used the slingstone-ish knot there.

now the interesting bit.  the string holding up the bike is tied to the cross beam with a buntline.  there are two or three round turns around the bike's frame, then a bowline to a carabiner.  another string is bowlined to the other side of the biner, and tied to the first string with an adjustable grip hitch.  I can move the bike in or out by sliding the hitch and opening the carabiner.

now the bikes are easy to get to, and nothing falls when bumped.  life is better.

what would you have done differently?  also, which knots do you use around the house?

This is in my car.  It's a bowline on a carabiner, with a tautline hitch on the other side.  charlie isn't climbing over my shoulder anymore.

this is how I've been tying a bag to my bike without a rack.  The string runs through the lip of the bag.  then I tied butterfly loops in both sides.  to fix it to the bike, I run the working ends around the bike's handlebars, then through the butterfly loops, then tied to each other with a turquoise turtle.

I have a few knots around the house and in my fishing boat in the backyard but I can't post pictures on here because it says my pics are to big or something. I've got two Trucker's Hitches holding down my 3 year olds high chair to the main chair. I've got cleat hitches, trucker's hitches, and lots of different hitches holding four different anchors in my boat. Oh, I've also got a couple of double bowlines/constrictors out back holding my sons swing together.

Here's a use I came up with that allowed the good ole' rope ladder (found in The Marlinspike Sailor by Hervey Garrett Smith) to come back to a useful life and make the little woman happy at the same time. Unfortunately, I didn't get to reap the rewards I thought I'd get as I broke one of her lighthouse plates (notice the clock) while hanging them on homemade hooks made from coat hangers.
