Rather tattered book

Dear Sirs,

I have recently acquired a rather tattered book which I believe to be Knots, Splices and Fancy Work, probably by Charles Louis Spencer. Unfortunately, some pages in the book are missing, particularly the title page that would show the author and date of publishing.  I understand that Spencer's book had been published several different times including some revised editions.

I wonder if you could suggest a method by which I could ascertain with some degree of certainty if it is in fact Spencer's book and which edition or alternatively who the author is.  I would be glad to provide you with scans
of any particular pages that would help in identifying the book and edition.

Your assistance in this matter would be greatly appreciated,

Sincerely,
Petr Stasa,

Petr,
I have several copies both of my own and the IGKT Library - so by process of elimination I hope I can help you.
First look to see if you have 'Lashings' on pages 91 - 93 - If you have it is the Revised edition printed in 1964 or later.  If not then I will see if I can determine another clue from the pre-revised editions which were printed from 1934 to 1958.

Thank. Yes, Lashing started on page 91, ended on  94 (bottom). Do you can determine "1964 or later"?

Petr,
This indicates that your book is one of the 'Revised' editions printed since 1964.
The Author is Charles L. Spencer and the revision was done by Percy W. Blandford (Now in his 90's, he is one of the 'founder members' of the IGKT)
I think that after The Ashley Book of Knots, this is perhaps the most popular of the 'old' books ever printed.  It is still one of the best books to learn from.
