I agree - there seems to be a 16 bight 3 lead Turks Head in the centre which stands alone (same as the 16B 3L TH in the second website pictures) but is then interwoven with the larger part of the "mat".

to the theme of the knot, the plait, and the vortex, as derived from Verrocchio.
A pattern of spiralling motion, evident as well in the elaborate hairstyle,

as well as to the botanical details of the background.
