Alternative to barrel hitch
« on: August 06, 2014, 05:10:11 AM »
Are there any alternatives to the barrel hitch that are more permanent and less likely to slip?  For instance, to carry a backpack when the straps have broken off.

That's a tough one without some idea of what shape the pack is and if there are any potential anchor points.  If you have an image of of the target object, that may help generate ideas.

If the pack is rectangular, but with no other potential attach points, a box sling setup may provide adequate stability:

If the pack has plenty of available fabric, you can tuck a small rock or ball in the fabric to make a head and neck of fabric to hitch around:

You could also possibly use a standard parcel-lashing type approach to encapsulate the pack, and then tie to that lashing, if things aren't too heavy.
