simple quick release loop
« on: July 02, 2015, 03:31:43 PM »
hi there knotters,

while playing around with the angler's (perfection) loop i came across this other one which can be very easily released by just pulling on the loop in horizontal direction. are you aware of this one, or is it a new one? i tried to find it in the ashley's knot catalog and other sources, but couldn't find it anywhere..

here is a video:

if it is new, it might be called "SQUIRL" - Simple QUIck Release Loop .)

It's probably been "fiddled" by various knot tyers,
though I don't recall having done so or not.  Might
be worth a few break tests vs. the angler's/perfeciton
loop
for kicks, to see if the S.Part's biting onto the
tail has some benefit.

(One need beware such untying methods lest they
aren't available : if one ties with a short eye not
giving purchase for pulling apart, here!  oops!)

Thanks,

not quite sure what you mean be "seeing if the S. part's biting onto the tail..."
sorry, i'm kinda new to this knotting business, so i'm lacking the nomenclature and stuff..

(yep, its not the safest or the most invincible of loops, but i thought it might be useful at times where time is a concern..)

Have a look at this fishing knot tied in monofilament - the number of wraps is greater but the basic structure is similar. http://www.netknots.com/fishing_knots/non-slip-loop-knot/

yep, that is a similar approach only without quick release feature which is imho the main benefit (or disadvantage ?) of "squirl"

not quite sure what you mean be "seeing if the S. part's biting onto the tail..."
That when the 100%-loaded part ("S.Part") enters
the knot, it makes its initial and highly loaded turn
against the tail (which isn't much tensioned, and
so should be compressed & yielding to the S.Part
and maybe that gives some advantage?!).
