ABoK 745/754 doing it wrong?
« on: April 24, 2016, 12:54:41 AM »
In ABoK description of #754 the illustration (which appears to be an overhand knot) is said to be the "cycle" or "imaginary profile" of the emerald knot (#745).  It also says that in 3 dimensions the 2 strands interlock.  So I tied what looks to me like a successful emerald knot (tip: easy and temporary seizing of strands can be done with a bulldog paper clip), see a side and end view attached.  I then pulled one strand from the completed knot which automatically unraveled the opposite strand leaving 2 interlocked half hitches.  Not 2 interlocked overhand knots.  I tried a few times with the same result.

1) did I do it wrong?  it looks like a successful emerald knot but it's not?
2) is Ashley wrong?  is the imaginary profile of the emerald knot NOT an overhand knot?  or is that not what #754 actually depicts?
3) is the strand removal technique that I used the wrong way to be looking at things to get at the imaginary profile?

I am looking for a multistrand knot that is (at least in imaginary pofile) built from overhand knots linked at the "back" similar to this attempt attached below.  Does this have a name/ABoK #?

Hi Carol,
I think there aren't Overhand Knots in the Emerald Knot structure (as in the Diamond Knot) and the "cycle" / "imaginary profile"  is without regard for the cross points. So, I think
1. you did it right,
2. maybe Ashley was wrong (was not so clear) to say that #754 shows the cycle of #745 and also of #752 (and in #752 there are Overhand Knots) (but without regard for the cross points the cycle (in 2 dimensions) is the same!)
3. your technique is not wrong

About your knot, is it a #752 without tucking the ends?
You could consider a knot based on the Footrope Knot, something like a Crown and a Double Wall or a Crown and Diamond...for instance #708...
or what about #742, #743?
Hope this helps.
Ciao,
s.
