I think I have the ultimate knot for the soft eye.  At least, it is the one I will be using when I build a banshee belay (see www.multipitchclimbing.com for an explanation of what that is)

Using a bight of sling, tie a left-handed bowline.  The tail will consist of a loop, which is then flipped over the knot (or instead you could feed the other end of the sling through the loop).  Then feed slack back through the knot so that the aforementioned loop/tail is snug against the knot.

By what criteria "ultimate"?
(As many will realize that in tying it you have passed
by the commonly known bowline on a bight.)

ps : The referenced site has perhaps the most cases
of not-evenly-dressed fig.8 eye knots that I've yet seen! !?

Haha!  Love that critique of the figure 8's, and I agree.

As I understood it, the crux of this thread was to address the vulnerability of the BoB, namely the non-redundant collar.

This knot has no such vulnerability, and its construction seems more suited to ring-loading.  That's why I think it's ultimate.

I also appreciate the water knot loop mentioned earlier, but that one is more chunky and harder to tie.

Hi Moss,
I don't know if you read all the thread, but the knot you showed was already suggested at reply #19

- What about a 2 strands standard bowline ( or better ABoK 1034 1/2 for ring loading?) tied with a bight?
you could use the bight as a third eye, or, if you don't like it, you could "back-flip" the bight (you can choose the side and the position).
