Oldest rope making machine
« on: August 05, 2017, 08:43:21 AM »
Hi All,
The rope makers might be interested in this: https://www.livescience.com/59756-oldest-ropes-tools-unearthed.html

I have no experience trying to make rope but would be interested in some comments on whether this was the likely use of this tool.  It seems the reproduction works but I'm not convinced.  Either way it is an amazing artifact - having had the "rifling" cut into the holes with just a sharp stone.  Even if you were a very skilled bone worker I wonder if the effort would be more than making hundreds of meters of rope by the traditional rolling and twisting that was used by "stone age" cultures?
