Multiple loops on single line - need help !
« on: January 12, 2021, 04:03:46 PM »
Hi folks.

Knot newbie so forgive any incorrect terms used.
I need a knot that makes at least two (but preferably four) loops that protrude from a central line.

Ive copied this knot from wiki - I think its some form of Zeppelin bend??
Does anyone know anything better ??
Ideally that produced four loops.
The loops will have things tied to them and the central line will be under tension too - all low mass, low force.
(not sure if that relevant but included for completeness)

Many thanks

Hi mowgo44 and welcome.

Can you elaborate on what the use will be? How much loading/conditions the affair will endure? Will this be a permanent set up?

Most multi-eye knots will be a fairly bulky item, so, perhaps a single eye knot with slings or carabiners would suffice. Or a close series of eye knots.

It?s a very unusual use I have for the knot.
It?s not going to be used for climbing.

The actual use is slightly complex but in essence I need to attach sixteen 3mm lines to a central 4mm line.
The 3mm lines are like the spokes of a wheel and all need attaching at (roughly) the same place on the central line.
My thoughts were to attach them in two groups of eight (to each of the two loops)
Or even better (if manageable) ...
Four groups of four (to four loops).

I was thinking of attaching the 3mm lines to the central line loops with two simple half hitches and a stop knot.

Why not attach them directly to the 4mm line, alternating sides?

You could use a cow hitch or clove hitch for each pair of the 3mm lines.

There would be too much difference in the height from the first to last.
The radial lines need to remain the same length and attach at the same point on the central line.

It?s why I thought of four loops (potentially)

Ok.

Although it seems to me that you will have to adjust the radial line lengths with any configuration that you may end up with.

More details!  What sort of loading/forces?
(hoping to think of some 4-eye solution,

 at same level).

Does this have to be tied of one strand or are multiple strands allowed?

Perhaps some of these single and multi-strand decorative knots out of ABoK will provoke some ideas, see attached.

DDK's idea made made me think of this (taken from one of my tutorials)

Another thing you might do is to make 8 thin lines twice as long as you need the 16 lines to be, and lay them parallell with the thicker line. Then tie around the middle of the bundle of thin lines (with the thick line between them all) with a constrictor or a strangle knot, using some thin, strong line. Then fold the upper halves of the thin strings down. Now you have your 16 lines coming out from approximately the same point on the thicker line. Then you make some half hitches just below the constrictor to keep everything in place and give it a neat look. Even better is something like a whipping. If the half hitches aren't many enough, or if the material is slippery, you can keep the whole bundle from sliding down the thick line by tying a double overhand knot on the thick line, just below the right height for the origin of the thin lines. Maybe it's best to make the 8 lines a bit longer than they are supposed to be, because there is always some unevenness you might need to trim off.

Sorry to have been unable to access this site for a while
(software issue),
but my latest, general thought on this problem
--still awaiting details, though--
is to have perhaps each quartet of the 16 lines
interlace and present one attachment line to be
joined with others and the main line.
--which leaves a LOT of detail to be worked out, yes!
