[Novice] How do I make this knot?
« on: April 18, 2021, 07:54:10 PM »

Hi everyone, I'm someone who makes keychains for a living and recently came across this.

Being new to the field, I've been trying to accomplish it but can't seem to find any tutorials or directions to achieving this. Any help or pointers towards the right direction would be greatly appreciated!

It will help to see the opposite side to what you show.

In the one image you have, there appear to be two tails
side-by-side at the lower end of the structure.  I cannot
imagine what is going on on the unshown side.

Thanks,

If you reduce the added coils, it may be nothing more than a slipped overhand knot (tied with twinned lines).  It looks like the very short free ends might pull out of those coils if the load gets too high, which may be the intent.  There might be some adhesive in there somewhere to prevent that.

Try this -

Take an end and fix it in place adjacent to the ornament.  Take the WE and pass it through the shackle ring and back down to the ornament ring.  Take the WE through the ornament ring and back up and again through the shackle ring.  Take the WE back down and make a final loop adjacent to but not through the ornament ring and the WE back to the shackle.

You should now have two loops either end and five runs of cord between them.

Take the WE near the shackle and wind it around the bundle of five cords for four turns down towards the ornament loop.  Finally pass the WE through the loop adjacent to the ornament loop and pull that loop tight by tensioning the appropriate shackle loop leg.

Balance up the loops and the structure, taking out any excess cord by drawing out the starting (fixed) end.

The loops translate forces to one another through the wraps making the loops secure. the starting 'fixed' line is bound but not secured, but to draw it out would need force to be applied to only its loop,  But even then, the remaining shackle loop would still be secure.

I folded my cord in half and brought the two ends down
leaving 2 loops on top and one loop at the bottom.
I tied a poachers knot with one of the ends.
Some glue in the center of the knot (cheating?) will
prevent the loops and ends from pulling out.

Nice one - what did you do with the ends?

Thank you.  I cut the ends close to the knot.  The ends and loops did not slip after a strong pull apart.  I added a small dab of glue ae each cord end just in case.
