Spherical Knots
« on: February 04, 2011, 08:48:39 PM »
Hello, I'm a recent joiner to this forum, at the moment I'm looking for a knot for a photoshoot, the basis for the shoot revolves around the Gordian Knot, I know some of what I have read points towards a turks head knot.  But what we are hoping for is something more spherical, the Monkey fist is an option, but our main goal is to make a knot that is a little less symmetrical.  Does anyone have any recommendations?
Thanks,
Tj

This is a link to a photo I did for some simple spherical turks head knots.  Is this what you are looking for?http://www.khww.net/forum/attachments/christmasornament.jpg

Is this a knot you want to tie yourself, or are you looking for some custom work?  It would also help to know where you would like to take the photos because there are people who tie knots like this all over the world.

Actually, the legend of how Matthew Walker saved his life by tying a knot on a rope that his judge couldn't untie, makes at least me associate with the Gordian thingie.

Hello tjphoto and welcome.

Questions: Will this just be a stand alone knot or involved in a run of rope?
Will you be needing this knot to be enclosing a core of some kind?

Most decorative spherical knots will take on the shape of a core given they have enough bights and parts using appropriately sized line.

There are "Globe knots", Pineapple knots" and "Turks head knots" that can fill the bill.

Give us some design data and we can better help.

I love these.  I want to do some ornaments for Christmas.  Any idea what kind of knot this is or how to do it?  I don't understand a lot of the written tutorials, but do pretty well with video ones.
Knot to be, or Not to be, that is the question!

This is the link to the listing of the tutorials I have posted at the Knot Head World Wide website.  http://www.khww.net/articles.php?cat_id=6

Click on the link 'Turks head - closed end grids'.  There are three grids in a Word document for closed end Turks Head knots which you can download and print.   Instructions for making a tool are in the document.  The knots in the photo are based on a 7L x 8B Turks Head, and the grids are titled for the base TH in which the ends are closed.  I think the 7L x 8B covers a sphere best, but all three of these knots will close down over a sphere.  Let me know if you have any issues tying these knots.

These knots are also called globe knots, and there are many combinations and permutations possible.

If you are interested in making Christmas decorations, I have found the clear glass balls at Jo Ann Fabrics during the Christmas season, and I have bought them on line.  http://shop.hobbylobby.com/crafts/glass-surfaces/glass-ornaments/
