ABoK online and private bookmarks
« on: June 23, 2022, 11:12:28 AM »
ABoK is available online, which is of great convenience.  If you open a free account with The Internet Archives, it allows you to bookmark the pages (visible to you only when you're logged in).

I've bookmarked some chapters that interest me and indicated the range of knot numbers that starts from the bookmarked page - it makes it easier to get around the book on screen.  You can also search for knot names or numbers (or any other text).

The URL in your browser's address bar refers to the ABoK page you're currently viewing - it is easy to copy and paste it as a link to the knot number you're referring to in your message.

Nice tip ty!
.
And this also is very helpful, believe i've seen you use it:
change the page n223  in this example to bring up a different page number on referencing links.
archive.org/details/TheAshleyBookOfKnots/page/n223/mode/1up?view=theater
and make that the hyperlink's address in the url=....... part when posting
example: a real fave to reference in a post: Bag Knot(Slipped) ABoK Lesson#1244
Kinda, easily, everyone on same 'page' more quickly; and of course being a link works on other sites.
As you scroll down, page numbers do change in the title bar online(to make link from for that page), but pages can render slow for each.
>>for speed of scroll and ctrl_F prefer download copy, and only use this online for giving a page, not general reading.
.
If have hard copy page number, that works too, the pdf starts on page_1 of ABoK, all previous pages, picture plates, contents etc. are simply after the last numbered page/index for online version.

We now return you to the safety of normal thinking peoples

This is true, I think - the online page numbers are offset by 1 compared to the printed book.  So for example the actual page 224 in the book will become n223 in the URL link (page #1 in the book is n0).

One more tip I discovered for inserting the links in your messages.  By default, the board uses pure text when you type a message, so you have to fiddle with HTML tags even when inserted by the Insert Hyperlink button (you will see url=... and will have to fill the blanks).

However, if you go to Profile/Modify Profile/Look and Layout/ and check the last checkbox 'Show WYSIWYG editor on post page by default.' and then save changes, the next time you type the message, highlight the text that you want to insert the link for and click the Insert Hyperlink button - then just paste the link into the pop-up box without seeing the HTML tags in your message.

I strongly recommend occasionally visiting the Donation Page when using the ABOK Online and other valuable assets hosted by the Internet Archive to the internet community.
