« on: December 30, 2022, 08:12:31 PM »
Hi

I'm seeking info about "John Smith's extra secure malinspike hitch"  which is referenced in a Brion Toss article from circa 2017 in the "Thou shalt Knot" companion book to the same titled Ashley exhibit at the New Bedford Whaling Museum.

thanks for any help

Andy

More than is in Wikipedia?  (-;

Well, I just amended that entry a bit, and added this:

Quote
The icicle hitch was developed by John Smith of the International Guild of Knot Tyers [sic],
and demonstrated by him at the eighth Annual General Meeting of the IGKT in 1990.
It was published in the IGKT's quarterly newsletter, Knotting Matters, in issue #32, pp.6,7.

So, take a gander at km032:06/7, for starters.
NB : the particulars are just that, for the presentation;
John advises that one might need to increase the number
of wraps.  Also, as a check on proper tying, the loaded
end should enter the knot bearing against the tail
and loading the coil at its near end, "coiling away"
for a gripping like that of the Chinese finger trap
--expanded coil demands narrower=tigher wraps!
