Birmingham bowline on a bight
« on: October 27, 2023, 06:23:36 PM »
I have always read that the Birmingham bowline cannot be made in the bight, yet here one is,... sort of.

If you tie a "legitimate" Birmingham and compare the two side-by-side, you'll note that there is indeed a difference, but the result is essentially the same two-loop knot, with two advantages:

1. Obviously, it can be tied in the bight. :-)

2. The two loops are very easy to size properly when forming the knot.

Just as in the Birmingham bowline, the two loops formed are independent, after tightening.

An interesting thing to note is that the "rabbit" here is made from a bight, and that it "goes around the tree" in the manner of a Dutch bowline, so as to wind up with the tail falling between the two loops. (If you go around in the standard direction, the result actually resembles a "Dutch" version of the Birmingham!)

I hope somebody finds this knot useful.

Hi TS

i was not aware that Abok#1074 bowline with a bight, is also known under the name of Birmingham bowline on a bight.

All your remarks are accurate, i simply have to add that the dutch/cowboy version, produces a splayed double loop version, in contrast with the #1074. It certainly is a good profile.

I would toss the tail back down through the collars, parallel to SP for a more compact form. The property of tying it in the bight (TIB) would still be in force.

Hi Kost_Greg,

Thanks for the comment!  You mentioned the tail,

"I would toss the tail back down through the collars, parallel to SP for a more compact form. The property of tying it in the bight (TIB) would still be in force."

That's what I generally do, but I didn't want to complicate the final image.  (Only four pics allowed, after all!)  :-)

BTW - Is it true that the current Forum is going away, into an archive??  If so, that's a real shame.  :-(
