That "New Forum" at IGKT.net
« on: January 09, 2024, 04:05:25 PM »
I've just signed in (after first trying do public read-only)
at IGKT.net and tried to view its "New" forum.  Each time
I tried to read any postings in the sub-forums (e.g.,
Practical Knots), I get nothing but this nastygram:
There are no topics in this category.

--even though per the forum it claims "1 topic" & "3 replies".

(edit 1/10
per Carol's reply :: yes, I too had previously read posts there.)

Happy New Forum or not?!
I'm hoping that someone savvy will find a way to CONTINUE
this forum, without the Pay-2-Play (i.e. post) restriction put
on the "new" one which isn't working anyway.

When I looked at the New Forum for the first time 2 weeks ago, the posts were viewable.  I've stayed logged in since and do a daily check to see if the post numbers have changed (there's no "show me unread posts" filter like this forum) but since the numbers hadn't changed, I didn't notice when the posts stopped showing.

Roughly (I'm not trying to remember EVERYlittleThing!) no change.

I logged-in at IGKT.net --which itself was a little fouled :
as after typing my username,
I hit TAB,
and was tossed into the main page, not asked for password
(and indeed not logged-in, thus!) ; had to use new presented
log-in windows (where TAB worked) to log it--
...
and got this nonsense notice : "LAST VISIT : NOW" !!!
Um, if "now" --my current looking-- is my Last Visit,
how could it ever be otherwise --since UNlogged in,
I can't check on my Last Visit).

Shows Carol Wang as currently engaged,
though clicking on her name gets me nowhere;
and Latest Activity / Topics gets nonsense as well.

Let's preserve the old forum, SOMEhow --surely in this
high-tech day there must be ways to accommodate software
by most decent systems!

It also looks like you have to be a paid member to participate in the forum.

That rules me out.

Seems a less than brilliant way to build up engagement.
But perhaps that isn't what they want.

It has been a pleasure however and I wish you all well.

Well, ha-ha, you are getting the same Nothing as we paid members!

Indeed.  And as for the IGKT Facebook site, well, one needs
to have bowed down to Facebook --which I have not, and so
I get to see nothing of that.  (Don't recognize any of the named
Mod.s/Admin.s there, IIRC.  (Don't find a Members Directory on
IGKT.net, btw, either --used to have something where one could
get a fellow knot-tying enthusiast's PoC info to correspond
(should they volunteer its publication), but ... where'd THAT go?!

Oh, hey, to the top point :: WE're all still (able to be) activer HERE.

I don't Facebook either.  If you look at what happened to Twitter you can see what relying on a service like that can mean.

Don't they physically send us a Member Directory?  They certainly used to periodically...

I am a dinosaur, I know.  Strangely enough, I consider myself a younger member.  I certainly was when I joined.  I wonder if that's still the case.  That might be part of the problem as it were.  Age of the steering folks for the guild.

Also British-ness.  I have observed in the groups I have joined that the British (?) perspective on what should be behind a paywall and how much $$ that should be is quite different from what I would have done.

I was thinking this morning that we should do a survey of the demographics/usage of the people currently using the forum... I think the forum software would only do one question at at time so you'd probably want to do a Google Form or some such... and then that sounded like too much work for something that would probably be ignored.  *shrug*

Oh, I should probably know but these things are not what I put into long term memory storage.  8)  Checked my files and I have a 2022 membership list in a digital document.

I just re-tried to use The New Forum,
and got the same nothing as in my OPost.

And is anyone raising Heck over this?
(If not, what does THAT non-action suggest?!!)

That your worries over the deficiencies of the new forum are at least premature?  8)  That inertia might mean that you never have to worry about it, unless you make too much of an issue of it? 8) 8)

i had a browse maybe a couple months ago at the new forum,
it seemed to be working, but could only click on one post at a time, instead of all topics on a page, or something,

on our igkt home page, this forum which i call current, is called 'forum archive',
which makes it sound inactive,

dropped a line to webadmin,
then read on our website that we don't have a webadmin,
looking for someone to fill the office,

and links to the fb group,
which was jumping the last time i looked, a couple years ago ☺

so, apart from the issues here,
the website is looking pretty good, i thought, and informative

i would join the other socials but it doesn't suit me at the moment
