How would you tie a fingertrap mesh from string?

A fingertrap mesh is a braid. Here's some instructions

. Instead of gluing the ends you can just continue on with your cord. You'll want something fairly stiff because yarn or the like will just collapse. The question is if it's stiff enough to grip, how well would it take the corners?
