CQB Quasi Bowline
« on: November 17, 2024, 04:09:45 AM »
I am making a claim of originality for a 'quasi' Bowline.
It is the integration of a nipping loop with a constrictor hitch.
Naming it the 'CQB' (Constrictor Quasi Bowline).
It is stable and secure, and resistant to jamming.
I am yet to subject this eye knot to further rigorous
testing to determine if it can be regarded as inherently secure.

I'm fine if someone steps forward and makes a counter-claim.
Only in the fullness of time will historical evidence be revealed.
EDIT NOTE:
Its becoming difficult to search this forum for historical photos.
Many of Xarax's historical images are dead - cant view them anymore.
This makes it difficult to thoroughly check before making claims...

I actually tied this a few weeks ago while tinkering with
a related quasi Bowline tied by Xarax (the 'Clover Bowline').
Xarax's version is not inherently secure - it quickly loosens
via slack shaking and cyclic loading. Its hard to better the great
Xarax... and trying to do so is virtually impossible. But,
I persisted and found this 'new' variation.

To Dan Lehman:
I have introduced a new term: Quasi
Previously, I had used virtual and pseudo to identify
eye knots that had a nipping loop but not the 'proper'
collar structure.
I had been searching for a long time to find a descriptor
that was more fitting for these types of "almost but not quite"
'Bowlines' - now settling on 'Quasi'.

Also to Dan Lehman:
This section of the IGKT forum is titled; New Knot Investigations.
If you believe you have invented a new knot, please post photos/descriptions for further assessment.
If the claim is disproven, the thread will move to a more appropriate board.

I am not claiming or demanding a Nobel prize, or any kind of award.

Here's why I think this topic category should remain in the IGKT forum:

We need to create the conditions for people to innovate and discover.
Without innovation and incentives for making new discoveries, a society
will stagnate and decline.
The innovators largely don't seek celebrity fame; the source of their motivation
is derived from the seeking of knowledge and the sharing of ideas for the
advancement of humanity which enriches the soul.

Indeed, a fine-looking BWL (I have no compunction to insist
on some "proper" collar).  And one that I think is currently in
--or just relieved from being in-- one of my play ropes.
(Some time ago, I set out a batch of hitches and looked
to putting a nipping loop through them.)

IIRC (play ropes not at hand), one can go four ways
with this :: both chiralities of the nipping loop,
and both with its passage crossing OVER... initial
collar or UNDER --the full loop ensures things stay
together!  (So, folding the Constrictor's lobes in
the proper way, Tails within, or the opposite way.)

Xarax, at least, DID put out nooses using the Constrictor
form; it's reasonable to move from there to eye knots,
end-2-end joints.
