spool storage
« on: May 05, 2025, 10:47:21 PM »
As a packrat, I'm always thinking about storage.  In particular, one of my biggest string pain points is how to organize my spools of cord.  While looking for something else, I came across this RepRack - filament spool storage system which looks very interesting.  Its most attractive feature is that it handles bigger spools unlike all the sewing thread spool storage solutions out there which won't help with some of the bigger spools I have.  The problem with most of the storage systems is that they expect the spools being stored to be the roughly the same size which is just not the case with my collection.  Looking at well organized weavers yarn shops where they have a similar spool size variation in their products, it seems that shelves versus some sort of spindle system is still the best choice...?

I personally like and use clear storage boxes that stack. Keeps supplies dry, dust free and visible.
You can arrange them by type(s) of materials/tools.

For some of the bigger spools, a rolling, multi-tier wire shelf might help.  I use them for a lot of my tools and it's nice to be able to spin them around to see the backside.  You could still attach pegboards for smaller stuff or bend your own wire hooks to any size you need to hang from the shelf wires.

 happy with my spools on broomsticks and suspended under some shelves,
on from the shelf brackets.
it has it's impracticalities too, but taking up air instead of shelf real estate.
and recently a mesh-like pegboard where i hang clusters of knots off,
and offcuts...
also a bit of a cut-down juice bottle type containers system, stacked, and using clear plastic as possible,
and then corralled in cartons, clear if possible;
good to know how others sort their knottery
